Why I Made Comola Bear:
Comola’s Story
Cancer is devastating. As a student working in a hospital, I will never forget a young mother who had to be in isolation while receiving radiation therapy. Even though her husband and children came to visit, she was not permitted to see them. All she needed to boost her spirits was a hug from her loved ones.
In 2020, we all watched as neighbors, friends, and family dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic. Images of patients in isolation, alone, struggling for breath, and their only way to say goodbye to loved ones was over the phone. These images from around the world reminded me of the mother in the hospital so many years ago.
In my own home, my small daughter would hug the phone whenever she spoke to grandparents and other loved ones through face-to-face calls. This is when and why Comola was created. To provide the ability to hug loved ones that we are unable to connect with either because of illness or distance. Comola bears bring the important sense of touch back into our lives.
